Hey bros, basically looking to make my desktop wireless mainly use the pc to game and was wondering what kinda hardware i should go for as in network card or usb? Im currently with virgin 60mb using the latest superhub router

Go for an internal card with external aerials definitely. I've had loads of trouble with USB dongles. Went wireless card and all trouble free. Ignore those who say you can't game over wireless. I have for years and very successfully. You do need a good signal though but it can be done.

It works, in the same way a 3 legged dog can still walk.

Wireless should be used for light browsing use only imo.

Why do you need wireless? Could powerline networking not achieve the same thing? It would be far better than wifi.

thanks! i know first hand that you can game on wireless as ive been doing so for over a year with my laptop :D

Well the superhub isn't known for it's great wireless. By the time you've spent £60-150 on a decent router, and £15-50 on a wireless card. You might as well just cable it up.

Trunking and hidden under floorboards etc.

Wirless N and now wirless ac have far surpassed the speeds powerline networking is capable of. I have a pair of 500mb powerlines and the speed of them is far lower then my 350mb wireless N. Wireless AC is capable of up to 1.3GBps which is just insane!

You CAN game on wireless, but in 99% of cases you could get a better experience on wired. You can also game on a 10 year old laptop, but you won't have as good an experience as on a modern desktop.

You don't realise how much difference a low ping makes until you get rid of 100ms worth...

Wireless on a laptop will never come close to wired on a decent desktop

Speed isn't important in online gaming - even the most strenuous use in the order of a few hundred Kbps... far less than broadband, wifi or wired connection. The real important statistic, once you have about 5-8Mb broadbandm is ping, and the closely related jitter (although high packetloss will ruin your game)

Sorry what? Losing 100ms ping by switching from wireless to wired?:confused: Ooh that would be good. I could have -40ms ping then. I could tell the future by plugging in an Ethernet cable!

I game on wireless and have a ping in the 40ms range. No different to what I get over powerlines and Ethernet direct to the router. The only difference I have vs powerlines is that my speed is faster over wifi.

People who claim otherwise generally haven't tried to game on a decent wifi network and take their experience from the crappy router their ISP provided them 10 years ago. The real disadvantage of wifi is that you have to invest a bit of money in a good router and wifi card that can take advantage of the 5Ghz range.

Do this..

ping 192.168.1.1 -t

(or whatever your router IP is)

Now do it on wireless, wired will always be more stable.

I don't count powerline, it's a horrible 'solution' to a problem.

Im unable to hard cable my property due to location of rooms etc etc
Powerlines have always failed in my property due to all sorts of wiring.

Got myself an Asus n66u router, tp-link 300mb n usb adapter and im connected at 300mbs.
Pings in online gaming like battlefield 4 i can get 12ms no problem.

As long as youve got a decent router and network card/usb then wireless is fine if you cant hard cable.

Ping statistics for 192.168.1.1:
Packets: Sent = 4, Received = 4, Lost = 0 (0% loss),
Approximate round trip times in milli-seconds:
Minimum = 0ms, Maximum = 1ms, Average = 0ms

Thats on a my wirless AC and the asus app tells me i'm connected at 1053 Mbps (1300Mbps is the theoretical max)

Will do, been going 10 mins so far so i'll post the results a bit later

**Update**

Ping statistics for 192.168.1.1:
Packets: Sent = 3899, Received = 3899, Lost = 0 (0% loss),
Approximate round trip times in milli-seconds:
Minimum = 0ms, Maximum = 125ms, Average = 0ms

So a single spike to 125ms but for the most part it was running perfectly. I've never noticed any problems playing fps games over this connection. Router is in the hall and the PC is upstairs in a bedroom but the distance isn't really all that far and there's only one wall in the way. I've also got the only 5Ghz network in range so interference is at a minimum there.

That's certainly possible, but to state that gaming over Wireless is like a three legged dog trying to run isn't true. I've done it for years and when I have lag it's network or game lag that I have no control over. Sure ten years ago with 802.11b, WEP and poor wireless routers and dongles it was rubbish but these days you'd be hard pressed to tell the difference with a good wireless n signal.
