hi there

I have a desktop pc and previously used to connect via ethernet to router

Having changed rooms I now need a wireless dongle or network card.

Can you recommend one? Bang for buck please..

Between the dongles and wireless network cards which acheive a better speed.

The isp is virgin fibre optic.

Any help would be appreciated

I would use a powerline adpater, my hub is downstairs, pc is upstairs on my 60mb wireless i get 28mb on powerline i get 60mb

what would achieve faster speeds a power line adaptor or a dongle like the one recommended?

I watch you tube video clips and occasionally download 500mb files...

can you recommend diff dongles and a power line adaptor please?

I need this device for 2 months until I change room again until I can plug in direct to router...

I bought these yesterday never even know how the technology worked either... but anyway, I swapped them for the devolo av500 mini as it has gigabit port on them. deffo agree on getting powerline adapter though. so much better than wireless if connections are good.

I believe you will still need one of the adapters to be plugged into the router though, can you do that?

i can get to the router

so if i plugged the ethernet cable into one plug from router and the other ethernet cable from pc into this plug voila i have wireless to my desktop?

are these devices better then the dongles? speed wise...

i have the fast virgin connection

Yes, but wired rather than wireless.

In most circumstances you'd need fairly exotic wireless to match the performance of AV500 (or even AV200) Powerline adapters. It does depend on your wiring to some extent, but there's only one way to find out.
 
so speeds must be just as good as plugging direct into the router?

albeit depending on the wiring having said that it would be better then wireless?

cheapest i can find these buggers is £27 can I get them cheaper?

it's pretty much like using and Ethernet directly from your PC to the router. I've just learnt the technology myself. I'd rather this now than wireless any day, if only i knew it existed earlier I wouldn't have used a 20metre cable lol

This is true but in the real world where people have concerns like time, ability to make/run/make pretty cabling in walls/under floor and fussy wives who see no point in it all, homeplugs are a great compromise for the little outlay ;)

thats the trouble i have. i was told i'd get around 60mbps with new broadband, i got 57/58mbps when i tried a wire in my PC to router, and using these powerline adapters i still get 57/58mbps. they seem to be very good so far.
