Hi there

I've just had Virgin Media install my broadband etc. and ever since the installation, I've not been able to connect wirelessly. I've been on the phone to Virgin many times, and they sent me an ethernet cable so I can connect to the net, but have done some checks and now they have told me that my wireless driver is not compatible with the hub. The driver that is currently installed is:

Atheros AR5007 and then some other numbers, not sure if these are important. (whatever this means...)

I've done an internet search and it's not obvious, I just want to know which driver to download. The laptop is Compaq Presario CQ60.

I'm completely clueless when it comes to computers so I'd really appreciate some guidance on this!

iim guessing this is the netgear superhub you are using? there should be no problem connecting apart from the fact virgin's supposed "super" hub is a load of dog droppings, it wont be anything to do with the laptop probably, and just their rubbish hardware, iv had nothing but problems since getting this hub, the old equipment was fine, they are just supplying useless equipment, im on 30mb broadband, and i rarely get it, usually im struggling on less than 1mb, this has been going on for months, wireless is always a problem for me too connection drop outs, or not connecting at all

I think I lowered the MTU when on the phone to the Virgin man, think I lowered it to 145?

As for their rubbish hardware, you're probably right but I did have problems connecting to someone else's wireless recently as well. Might take my laptop somewhere else and try it again.

Can you post the full driver version and date?

Edit: And what O/S? Windows 7?

Yup Windows 7 I think.

Not sure how I find out the date of the driver...

As for version, it says Atheros AR5007 802.11b/g

Hope this makes sense :/

If it's Windows 7:
  1. Open control panel
  2. Choose device manager
  3. On the list of devices, expand the 'network adapters' category and you should see your wireless adapter name
  4. Right click it, choose properties
  5. Click the driver tab along the top, will show the section displaying driver version and date

Ok, so this should be the driver you need (I'll direct link the file):

http://www.station-drivers.com/tele...s_wifi_9.2.0.412(www.station-drivers.com).exe

The file is a self extracting executable (that is you run it, and it'll ask where you want to unpack the file).
  1. Create a new empty folder somewhere first
  2. Run the downloaded file, choose your newly created folder as the location to unpack to
  3. Browse to the folder you made, should contain two new folders within - 'drivers' and 'inf'
  4. Go into the 'drivers' folder, and look for setup.exe amongst the other files in there
  5. Run that, installer will now run and update the driver
  6. Done, verify the driver has been updated by checking the device manager section as mentioned before
You can safely bin the folder you made with all the files in afterwards.

Yeah. If it's the driver install part it just means they are not WHQL signed, go for it.

If it's on the .exe assuming you have scanned it with AV and are relatively trusting of the source then go for it also :D

You mean when you try to unpack it? If so, don't worry about it, the file is safe. I've installed the same driver I've linked you to on two PCs - a laptop with an AR5004 adapter, and my dad's PC which has the same model that you have (AR5007). Worked fine for both, hopefully should for you aswell.

Well unfortunately none of this worked, I'm pretty much at my tether's end, spent about 40mins on the phone to tech support yesterday while they remotely accessed my computer, still couldn't get it connecting.

I spoke to a friend yesterday and they had the same problem on theirs, and Virgin sent them a free dongle to plug in, hopefully I can persuade them to do the same for me.

Thank you for all your help anyway :(
