Can anyone recommend a good wireless extender or the best way of extending my wireless? The router's down in the living room and going through one floor and a number of walls is dropping the signal massively once it reaches my laptop.

I've already tried a foil parabola on the router and changed the channel to a not-used one to not much avail so I'm after a wireless repeater to either put in the downstairs room below mine or in the landing outside my room. It needs to be completely wireless (apart from the power, of course), so any recommendations or tips?

I live in a 3 floor house which is linked to a separate flat next door. The modem is located in the flat next door :o. I have some home plugs going from downstairs flat to the middle floor, connected to an old router. Using that as an access point has worked flawlessly for me.

There can be a lot of caveats with using wifi repeaters. Homeplugs are generally a better choice. You can either have a cable from the upstairs homeplug direct to your laptop, or have it going to a WAP (or crippled 2nd wrouter) upstairs. It is also possible to get homeplugs with a built in WAP.

Can you expand on the HomePlug thing a bit? Most "normal" people would call me a bit geeky, but anything to do with networking totally loses me.

Basically I just need someone to tell me exactly what to buy that's got a good performance to price ratio.

Edit: Might be worth mentioning that the only reason signal is a problem is for game pings and ventrillo. Web pages load fine, the former is terrible, so ping etc is of upmost importance.

Plenty of people using homeplugs for gaming and are happy with latency. I wouldn't recommend a particular brand/model because I haven't seen enough personally. Maybe better to ask in a new thread or search some previous ones.
