Wireless Extension Point?

Ok...so my router and adsl modem are located up in my room...which is upstairs from the living room. Now, laptops in the living room only get a mediocre signal, I was wondering if I could place some kind of Extension point at the midpoint between this two places to allow the living room area to get a better connection.

Is this a good idea, or is there a better/easier/less expensive way of doing this? Can anyone point me to an inexpensive gadget like this? What are they called?

you'd be looking for a wireless repeater. theres a few on the market, might be easier to try replacing/repositioning the aerial on the router

Take a look at the ethernet over mains stuff in the shop - not cheap but im liking the look of it more and more
