hi i have a linksys wrt54gl router in the front bedroom where virgin media were too lazy to run a cable they just wanted to use the old connection that was left by the previous tennant.

the building has thick stone walls which causes a problem even with tomato firmware and the xmit power boosted but ive recently added a wireless card to my desktop pc which is on the opposite side the building to the router as the router is in my parents room and to be honest the signal suffers it works but it suffers.

i have a laptop which is constantly located next to my bed which is against the nearest wall to the room the router is in is there a way i could use that as come kind of repeater by sharing the wireless connection

what i have done so far is shared the connection on the laptop but mydesktop dont pick up no new networks i dont see why this shouldnt work but i thought i would ask before pulling my hair out lol

Sharing the connection doesn't mean that the laptop's working as a repeater. Without some extra software, there's no way to make the laptop's wireless card work that way - the best you could do is connect the laptop to the router wirelessly and use its wired network card to connect to the other machine.

thats the other option i had thought of i just didnt wanna have a 20ft cable runnin along the room lol

plus next week im going to stay at my dads house and all he has is a wired connection to 1 desktop so im trying to think of a way to make that desktop wireless somehow would using my wireless dongle in the desktop enable me to bridge the connection somehow making the desktop and access point or would i need to buy something to do that

Depends if the software for the wireless dongle has options to make it work as a wireless AP. You could probably get it to work in ad-hoc mode though.

well ive seen some litle the datel wifi max which is meant to be for stuff like the DS but thats also been given a dont bother from some sites but i saw one on the bay that says its better but lookin at them they all seemthe same im notquite sure what im looking for as im new to wireless only been using it a couple months
