Wireless extention help

Hi all,

Currently I have an asus RT-56U as my main router. This sits downstairs and to be fair it has been a cracking piece of kit ever since I brought it. Recently I have add 2 Now TV boxes to stream content from my central PC to the front room TV and the upstairs PC. Now here is were I have the problem, the Now TV boxes downstairs work flawlessly everything but the one upstairs buffers a lot of the content that I try to watch, I can only assume this is due to the wireless signal not reaching the Now TV boxes upstairs since that is the only factor that is different. Would I be able to buy something like the simple modem below

and network that to the existing router and then connect the Now TV box to that? I already have CAT 5 cable running to the upstairs bed room and of course I am trying to find the cheapest solution to the problem. I dont want to spend the money if it wont work.

It'll work, just configure it as a wireless access point.

I'd stretch your budget a bit and get something with 300Mbps wireless, the RT-N12E is only £18.
 
Yeah I am sure I can stump up the extra cash for that no worries, how do I go about configuring the router? since 192.168.1.1 will be the IP address of my current router? I suppose the main router will just allocate it an IP and I can then use that? sorry if this sould like a silly question just wanted to get it all right so I understand it before buying.
 
The RT-N12E has an AP mode you can select. It's simple enough to configure and is detailed in the user manual.

You'll want to configure it before you connect it to the main network.

Have you considered using homeplugs?
 
Why would the OP want to use a Powerline connection when he already has Ethernet in place? It'd perform worse, and cost x3 more, than his original plan to use a wireless router as an access point.
 
Just to update this thread, finally managed to get hold the 12E and am happily using it as an AP in the upstairs bedroom to help the NowTV box along a bit. Money well spent for this one I think, the devices that were nearer to the upstairs 12E auto connected to it was it was all configured and I am now enjoying being able to watch whatever I want upstairs.
