Hi,

My Mate has Tiscali (yes I know but he won't/can't move) & he is planning buying a laptop which means he now wants wireless.

Could anyone recommend a wireless router that will work with tiscali adsl please, I've been on cable for years & never had to deal with adsl so far. It just looked like a tangled mess to me.

Thanks in advance, his budget is "as low as possible" to quote him lol.

That doesn't have a modem, so it would be as much use as a chocolate fireguard.
Something like the Netgear DG834G would probably do but ISTR CPW giving out routers for nothing.

I'm on Tiscali, just bought a Netgear DG834G V5 from the bay for £18 inc postage, won't arrive until tommorrow at the earliest though. I've heard nothing but good reviews about them though.

Will have a looksie, cheers.

Wow looks like you got a steal there lol.

So would his existing modem from Tiscali work with the OCUK Router mentioned above?

Don't let them send him the standard thing that they give away free. The missus has one and its shocking (its a Siemens - not sure of the model) As said above I'd get a Netgear DG834G, the latest ones come with a single click setup for novices. Otherwise they are pretty cheap second hand. Think we've only had a single one brick itself in the 40 or so that we have at work.

I think he has a sagem one & it looks like it is USB, he is bringing it tomorrow so I will see it then.

If it is USB, what would you recommend then?

Yes, though the DG834G mentioned already is an ADSL router too.
ADSL2+ is backwards compatible with ADSL. You'll be lucky to find a modem nowadays that only does ADSL.

Other than you'll need a username and password for the router, there's no real difference between ADSL and cable.
You're insulated from some of the hassle because VM give you a modem with an ethernet port on it. If anything, there's more hassle dealing with MAC addresses and cable modems...

I'm with Tiscali / Talk Talk used a Netgear DG834G for a few years without any problems, got myself a Linksys by Cisco WAG320N-UK the other day which also works without any problems

Cheers all I will tell him to get the DG834G.

I'm not saying it's more hassle, I have never had to deal with ADSL before is all :)

Thanks again, I'll see when he wants to order.

There will be more options within the control panel than on your cable connection due to the fact that you will be able to adjust the noise settings etc. We've found that letting the thing run its automated setup is much easier than buggering about with it yourself.
