Behind you... Naked!
Until recently I have been using a Netgear DG834PN.

Forgetting about the Wired stuff to it, my daughter has her Desktop talking to it at its connecting at 54 and its fairly acceptable speeds I suppose. Internet is great but its lacking when doing lan gaming and rubbish when copying movies up to her room.

So, I decided to up to an "N" router... I opted for a DGN1000 ( Well one came up at a nice price and I grabbed it rather than did any homework to decide. ) and anyway, I got it and I also splashed out on a couple of "N" adapters to get the full benefits.

The problem that I am coming across is that even though it connects at the full 150 and its showing a full 5 bars, the actual speed is a lot slower than it was on the "G"

What could cause this?

Anyone know of any things I might like to try out?

Thanks.

Try different channels on the router, you will find that your air waves are probably saturated with neighbours signals etc. I have a similar issue difference between all other channels and the one I settled on.

crippled sub 6MB s download 1-2 up with very high jitter to solid 20MB up and 8MB down no jitter. This is refering to my bband connection but the difference was night and day, and down to finding a quiet channel.

Inssider is a small networking application that will help you see which wireless signals are in your area, how strong they are and what channel they are on. It's very useful. In my area channels 1 and 6 are the hot favourites with most wireless signals so I switched to channel 11. You might also benefit if you could go 5ghz rather than 2.4ghz with your N equipment.

Thanks guys... I have not had the chance to play just yet but I will do tonight I hope.

Channel... Not sure what its on, but I have to confess that I dont think I have altered this, so cheers for that...Definitely see a fair load of other networks so its quite possible to be a big issue.

5 instead of 2.4 ? - erm... Ok? I wil let you know when I know.

no 5ghz on the dgn1000 I'm afraid! But yes, try and find a clear channel, or you'll still be stuck with poor performance. Also, do you have any G stuff that connects like phone etc. If not, then make sure the router is in n mode only not mixed b/g/n

Not got 5Ghz mode Im afraid.

Shame ... I think? LOL

Erm, Channel... Well yes it was on 6 so I have put it onto 11 to try out... Im not running up and around to mess about so I will just go to my daughters room later on and have a play about.

Mixed b/g/n = Ah well maybe yes.

My router has only a few options

B+G / Up to 65 / Up to 150

I have it set to 150

Thats the only way I can get the speed up... And of course the speed is why Im posting this - LOL

Anyway, I have to have a play about and I will have a proper look shortly when I have the time.

Thanks guys...

Ok guys.

I have had a bit of a play earlier on... Only a bit of one.

I have used it on Channel 11 for a couple of days and is it any better I am sort of thinking it might be, but I also have a sneaky that I am getting a bit of a placebo effect.

I copied a 3GB ISO up to the Wireless PC and it was still going half an hour later... It eventually finished but after 30 minutes I got fed up of waiting.

I had a little fake one on one on UT Classic ( Bit awkward to do a proper LAN test when its only me in the house and each PC is in a different room, but the bots seemed to be doing their jobs as they should and there was no noticable lag as such.

So, I will cycle throgh some more channels just in case I get a better responce but channel 11 certainly does feel better than channel 6 was.

What else?

Oh yeah, I cannot find any way to force "N" only.... My laptops are "G" anyway so I do need the "G", and besides, the previous router is a DG834PN and thats "G" and I was having ZERO issues with that, even when I piddled about and used Wireles on all of my LAN PCs and the Laptops purly for a kick, it still performed brilliantly.

So, surely using one or two "G" devices on the "N" router would not affect it that much would it? Or would it?

Anyway, small update and a thank you for the help so far...

Cheers guys.

it might not, but the router would drop down to g mode, so no real point having n
you might have to just get used to low throughput, wireless saturation ruins a lot of people's experience with wireless these days, the technology is just not good enough with hundreds of competing networks to not experience slowdowns and problems. Since I moved to a new house, I've replaced as much of my wireless network as I can and have been far more satisfied than I ever could be had I stuck with a mixed wired/wireless network

Oh I fully agree.

I personall was perfectly happy with my old router, but my darling daughter does not want a cable running into her bedroom.

( In spite of the fact that I have my entire LAN room all running off Ethernet and that I have cables going up into the attic and running to/from the kitchen to the living room, and in spite of the fact that these wires are all completely invisible and/or behind trunking - No, apart from that of course )

I even got a pair of Homeplugs and these, while reliable, are slower than the "G" which was weird?

wiring does seem to be a variable factor in homeplugs...however I was pretty pleased with some 200mbs ones I setup for someone recently...

Dunno what speed mine are supposed to be, but I had a pair of Zyxel and a pair of Belkin and I swapped the Zyxel with my mum, for her BT ones that she got with BT Vision because her wall sockets were recessed.

Either way while I never once actually tested the speeds as such, they all seemingly ran the same... i.e reliable enough for basic internet useage, but disgustingly slow when I tried to copy some files over the LAN.

IIRC they showed up to be 8Mbs but thats a number I just pulled out of my backside so apply salt on that one.

If that is indeed the case, then of course the speeds I am / was getting would be indeed what I could expect... I think I will dig them out actually.

But yes, the wiring in my house was re-done only a few years ago, when I built the LAN room... Its good wiring... I hope LOL
