Just had a killer day at work with wireless drop outs all over the place. Can I run my setup past you guys and see if anyone has any good ideas?

We have a SBS 2003 server running DHCP - 3 wireless routers connected to the LAN with the same SSID - WPA - PSK on. The routers have static IP addresses and DHCP is turned off.

3 different channels - 1,6,11

2 routers are linksys, 1 netgear.

Now after sudden drop outs, which may have been another wireless station interfering with our office setup, I changed the SSID's to 3 different names and everything is stable so far.

The strangest thing is i'm sure I make changes on some of the Linksys boxes and they don't stick?

Thanks for reading this by the way!

maybe too much traffic kicking the wireless nics off. do you keep traffic logs or anything? Is this a first setup or is has it been running awhile?

Its been running for a while, my hunch is wireless interference from somewhere or even from the access points with each other. I guess i'm looking for the 'right' way to get this set up so its as reliable as wireless can be - moving back to cable isn't an option unfortunately.

Don't rule out DEAUTH (deauthentication) attacks on your wireless netwoks form someone close by !

Seems that everyone is into trying to hack someone elses wireless networks!

Without going into details, No, the WPA makes no difference to the DEAUTH request.

It's pretty simple to make a wireless device drop it's connection.

Ok if there's something I can do about this feel free to MSN me or something. If I go through the logs I assume I would see a MAC address connecting that I didn't recognise?

One minor thought on changes not sticking on Linksys routers...

I have the same problems ( especially when configuring from Windows Server 2003 ) as the new edition Linksys firmware uses JavaScript and DHTML to apply chages and change the interface. Unless the browser supports these the changes appear to work , but havnt changed when you log back in.

Miffed me the first 20 times :|

Ok everything resolved kind of. Ended up chasing my tail by logging into one linksys box and setting it up, then going to the other one and the first one getting knocked out while i was putting the settings in.

Turns out I was using the same local IP address to administer the box which was conflicting with the first box. So that explained why the setting weren't sticking!!

Then my boss turned DHCP on another router which knocked the whole server out - we are now back in business though!

Severe stress but its nice to relax now! Thanks for help guys..
