Hey guys, ive recently got a laptop that is wireless enabled. right i have a Cable internet connection going through a standard ethernet router supplying 2 main desktop PC's, basically i need to know what router i need to get the laptop on the internet, but keeping the 2 desktop computers on ethernet, or if that isnt going to happen, if i buy 2 pci wireless cards, would the internet connection on both computers (router would be in same room, no more than 8 ft apart) have the same type of connection as ethernet...

i have a Netgear wireless ethernet bridge WGE101, i guess not thats any good, it was given to me, so i dont know...

as you all guessed im totally new to this wireless malarky.

thanks.

You can keep a mixed Wireless and Wierd setup.

There are ton's of posts on here describing what you are doing. We need more info from you - i.e. are you on ADSL or Cable?

Your Netgear Bridge means you could save some cash and buy a straight forward router. Then attach the bridge to one of the ports ('tis what I do with my Linux router). OR just buy a new WiFi Router/Modem and sell the bridge. :)

Ok well ive got cable broadband....ive got a netgear cable router, and also a netgear wireless bridge....so your saying that i can connect the bridge to a spare socket on the router, and that will supply the bridge with internet, thus supplying the laptop with internet?

ok tryed that, and the wireless light is constantly flashing, in the manual it says, its not connected to a network....well the laptop doesnt even find anything when it searches, so im doing something wrong, as this wireless malarky is strange

goto www.netstumbler.com and get Net Stumbler, then run it, and see if it detects the bridge. The bridge may be in bridging mode rather than access point mode. You'll probably have to change the mode by logging into the web interface using ethernet.

ok tryed all that, net stumbler does not pick it up, ive plugged in the ethernet into my main computer, and there is no such setting to change it to access piont rather than bridging mode, so basically im screwed on this for now...now i need some help from you guys on how to really get this working...its ok me trying to search for something i havent a clue what im searching for, so it would be helpful for someone to post something that will actually help me out...im not lazy or anything, i just dont know what the heck im doing wrong, or what the heck im actually doing regarding this wireless stuff.

Try the netgear site for the manuals.

Look on the back of the WiFi bridge and you should find a reset switch of some form. Press this to get it back to factory defaults.

There should be a page in the WiFI box which mentions:

An SSID - this is the "name" of your wirless network
Channel - a number to pick to avoid clashing with your neighbours.
Encryption - Start with it disabled. Just to make sure you are getting the WiFi working. Then turn on WPA-PSK and supply a pass key.

Also - stikies at the top of this thread on networking.

Or ask more here :)

It should work as an access point, but if it doesn't you can set it to work in ad-hoc mode with the card, which should give you a similar connection.

right ive tryed all that, not luck at all, ive looked at the sticky, couldnt see anything that trys to address what im trying to do for my situation....so basically im giving up, im sending the laptop back and get my 1grand back, what a bloody waste. if someone can actually help here, then i may consider not taking it back, but its on thin ice. :(

Laptop in question is a sony vaio model number vgn-fs285h

Ok an update......the Bridge wants to run in Ad-hoc mode...ive got 128bit wep security, so its running with all that now, this bridge seems to run backwards from what ive been told to do, and now ive figured it out, alls good, excellent connection through out the house, ranging from 89% to 98%....really my question is now, is ad-hoc good or bad?

Its ok for what you want to do, but if you want to add any other computers to the network wirelessly, you would really have to get an access point.
