Hey guys,

Got a Netgear DG834PN Router, but having trouble with setting up the wireless :(

I can get the WPA-PSK mode to work (where i enter a code of numbers on the router and match that same code when connecting with the laptop).

Is this option the best for encryption though?

Also, how do I get it so that I can just connect wirelessly with the laptop without having to enter the code all the time?

The router also mentions the code changes to maintain security... so will I need to keep checking what the code is before i connect with the laptop?

Any help on wireless would be great guys.. this is one area im not so handy in :(

With regards to the encryption, WPA2 > WPA > WEP. If your router doesn't support WPA2, then WPA will be fine. with any encryption option, make sure you use a long, random password. Something like this would be good:

JfCvCUvl!Ug42eL8RdlCQ2G$T1p6ZzRtUedg,NHxry#sSC!tqb&6dB,&Bm1lbST

Ignore the bit about the code changing to maintain security. This is done in the encryption algorithm as part of the WPA/WPA2 standard. This is why WPA/WPA2 is more secure than WEP. You'll never be prompted to change it again, but it is good security practice to change passwords on a regular basis.

Are you using the manufacurers wireless software to handle wireless connections or Windows?

I use the Windows Wireless Zero Config on my laptop and any access point I successfully connect to becomes a prefered network and will automatically connect when in range of it in future(no need to enter pass code again).

The wireless network adaptor im using came built into the laptop (laptop is a HP, not sure of exact model number atm). Would it be better getting a netgear one?

The software I think is to do with windows afaik, but to connect I didn't have to use the wizard. I just clicked the wireless icon in the taskbar and told it to refresh and seach for local networks.

On the router, do I need to do something to always give access to the laptop or will the laptop remember the password so it can then connect automatically when in range?

The wireless options I have are:

WEP (Wired Equivalent Privacy)
WPA-PSK (Wi-Fi Protected Access Pre-Shared Key)
WPA-802.1x

I think WPA-PSK will be the easiest to setup. Dont understand WPA-802.1x, it asks for..
Radius Server Name/IP Address
Radius Port
Shared Key

Also, is Allow Broadcast of Name (SSID) required to be on?

I'll give it another try tonight taking into account what you said.
Just realised in the Wireless Station Access List I had entered the Laptop MAC code but not clicked enable Wireless Station Access List, so I'll give that a try aswel.

I think I may have rushed it a bit, so I'll give a few things a try before asking for more help :D

Will report back on my findings :)

Cheers for the help!
