I have an office external to my house about 50 metres away. The phone socket and router for broadband are currently in the office. However i want to create a wireless network that will network the house with the office for access to files and internet from 2 laptops.

What do i need to achieve this and could you recommend specific products?

Im guessing-

Wireless Router
2 wireless cards for the laptops
something to extend the reach/signal (does this exist?)

anything else i may need?

Do you have a clear line of site between the two locations? If so you would be ok with just a good quality MIMO router and Wireless card.

Yes you can get wireless repeaters but obviously they will have to be plugged into a mains socket, so it depends on what is between the house and office (garden, garage, shed with power sockets etc).
It will also depend on thickness and material of external walls.

If you own the land between the two buildings, you may want to try laying a cat5 cable, and doing it wired.

There are a few suppliers of outdoor, high gain directional antenas that will probably do the job quite easily over that distance or you could try some of the new networking over powerline devices that are available for about £100 a pair. They run at around 200Mbps which should be more than adequate for your needs. As long as your office and your home share the same power supply (consumer unit) you should have no problems. The one in the house could then be attached to a wireless access point and you will have a wireless network in your house running off your broadband in the office.
