Hi, very soon I will be connecting to the internet wirelessly using a Netgear DG834G router for the 1st time and am just looking for advice in regards to wireless security.

Firstly the security options on the router are WEP, WPA-PSK, WPA2-PSK, WPA-802.1x, WPA2-802.1x and a couple of others. Which one should I choose, at the moment WEP is selected.

Secondly in regards to WEP Security Encryption, I can select either 64bit or 128bit, which one should I chose?

Thanks.

wep is probably the least secure method other than open - it'll stop non-savvy people from connecting to you. WEP has a massive flaw that can allow it to be cracked in seconds.

WPA-PSK at the very least and if your equipement supports it, WPA2-PSK as it's more robust again, make the key as long and as random as you can, save it to a text file and you can deploy it to other pc's quite easily.

Definately WPA2. WEP is easily hackable these days by anyone with the right tool.

As above poster has said make a strong alphanumeric key and write it down.
