Hello theer hope someone can answer my question (i think i know the answer but figured I'd ask anyway).

I want to buy a wireless desktop however there is a catch i need to be able to use it on 2 pcs (like a kvm) now i currently have a kvm switch between the two machines and wonder if something the same could be done with a wireless solution.

Cheers

Thought I'd bump this in the hopes that there's someone out there who has found a proper solution to this problem, and that is how to control 2 PCs with a wireless keyboard & mouse.

I have found a solution of sorts but it's not ideal and it goes like this...

Setup - two 'home built' PCs based on ASUS A8N32 mobo's, one running XP SP2 and the other running Vista RC2 (soon to be Vista Home Premium OEM). Monitor is a Viewsonic VP930 and the mouse/keyboard is a Microsoft Wireless Laser Desktop 6000v2 (which is USB-wireless rather than bluetooth).

My temporary solution is a Belkin Omniview 2-Port KVM Switch with Audio Support and Built-In Cabling, USB (part no. F1DL102UUK).

Problem #1 - the switch comes in packaging that clearly states... this switch will not support wireless keyboards and mice. Doh, it doesn't mention that anywhere on the Belkin website or on the retailers website! Not to be put off I connected it all up and powered up the Vista PC.

Problem #2 - whenever I switched to the Vista PC, the switch immediately flipped back to the XP PC which was powered off, thus showing me a blank screen! Same thing happened if I tried using the XP machine with the Vista one switched off. The KVM switch would always switch straight back to the machine that was powered off.

Problem #3 - power on both PCs at the same time. The switch refuses to show any video output until both machines have finished booting and have reached the GUI logon prompt.

At this point the switch works perfectly, just as you'd expect. The video signal is rock steady with 1280x1024 @ 60Hz from either PC with no ghosting or other problems. Keyboard & mouse response is fine and you can happily switch between the two PCs using the illuminated button on the KVM itself. I did try out the included software which is basically a little .exe that sits in the system tray which you right click on and choose 'switch' to flip to the other PC, however it's just as quick to use the button on the switch.

So my problem is - if either PC fails to boot, or shows me something during the boot process then I'm out of luck, and I guess that's what Belkin mean by saying wireless support is not included. When I come to rebuild my Vista RC2 machine (today with any luck as Overclockers dispatched my Home Premium bundle yesterday :D ) then it's going to be a case of removing the switch and cabling the peripherals directly into the Vista machine, building it, then reinstating the KVM etc.

Given the number of wireless keyboards/mice out there I was sure there would be a proper solution, but having spent an age trawling thru Google searches I've drawn a blank. Maybe I'm not looking hard enough, so if anyone out there has sussed this, I'm all ears!
