wireless lan proxy server for a hotel?

I'm interested in setting up a wireless network up in a hotel for a friend.

Just wondering if anyone can guide me to how to set up a proxy server asking for credit card details and the like for the customers.

tried googling but could not find nothing.

those sound like two completely different goals?

a) wireless network so hotel customers can surf wifi broadband on their laptops.

b) a proxy server to accept credit cards? is this for the hotel to take customer's payments?

i have setup payment gateways for websites before and have setup wireless lan broadband networks but am unfamiliar with a 'proxy server to accept credit cards and the like from customers'.

Presume he means the wireless net won't be free, so the proxy asking for CC details will be to pay for the internet usage...

Well when I'm in airports and stuff, they usually get you to pay. I've been in hotels in the states and they ask for payment to surf the net, just enter in your CC details and their system lets you access the web.

I assumed it was a proxy server.

It's not really a proxy server - it's a whole software solution that you need. There are free ones, but they tend to not include any methods for payment - people who give software away also tend to think that internet access should be free too.

Type 'wireless hotspot software' into google. This came up near the top, but i bet it's expensive.

ahhj i've seen this before. T-Mobile use it in Heathrow for their hotspots.

tbh, you might be best of asking the same kind of question on somewhere like Smoothwalls forum. They might have some kind of customisation for this kind of thing.
