Right, Upstairs in my house is the computer. I dont have a router nor any wireless stuff etc, broadband is just from a telephone cable that comes into one of my spare bedrooms straight into the modem.

Downstairs in my lounge I have a Hi-Fi system comprising various seperate units, cd, tape, record, AV amp etc. Now what i would like, and i have NO idea if this is at all possible. But is there some 'device' that i can buy that would plug into my AV Amp on the inputs that would allow me to look at and play my computers collection of MP3's on my system downstairs, therefore saving me having to change cd's all the time and having all my music collection at my finger tips for instand play back.

Like i said, no idea if anything like this is made. If so, please do let me know.

many thanks

Its called a modded Xbox with XBMC. You can stream music and audio from your pc hard drive to it. Just connect it to your router next to your seperates, connect xbox to seperates too.

Voila. You will also need to connect to a tv. Maybe a small lcd/tft would look better?

Now MarkLP, you hit the nail on the head, thats the kind of thing i am talking about. bet it's not cheap (always the case things that I want lol)

But, say i got that and then i bought a wireless router, what do they do these wireless routers, is it basically a device that transmits the broadband internet signal to be computer without any wires. As its not something i really need as my modem is sat next to my computer and the BT line comes straight into that room anyhow.

But that item you linked to, is the kind of thing i believe would do the Job, cheers

I would buy that Roku if i were you. The only thing that would bother me is the limited display. But for £100 it seems good. The other factor is, do you want your PC with the MP3's on all the time? Is this what the spare PC will be used for? a File server? What will the cost be of leaving it on 24/7?

Rhys, I may use my spare PC as a file server, as for cost of leaving it on, I dont think pc's cost much to run really anyhow.
But that Roku is the type of thing im looking at for sure, Now i need to work out is i need just a wireless access point, or a router.

I think the Slim Devices ones were the original devices to do this, although i may be wrong. My Dad has one at his flat linked to a Linux box and its just brilliant. The player/app on the PC is web-based and seems to be able to do all the kind of stuff that iTunes does (playlists etc.). You can browse by genre, artist and all that kind of stuff (shuffle etc.) from a remote in the lounge. And with his setup and mp3's ripped at 320kbs it really does sound excellent. And of course displays everything nicely for you.

I think his workmate bought the Roku one, it looked pretty cool when i got delivered to the office, but i never had a chance to play with it.

Scam, thats the kind of thing for sure, slowly reading up on them all.

tell me though, do they pick up like this:-

At the moment all my music (mp3) is kept on my PC as in

My documents -----> Mu music -----> MP3 Files ----> The alphabetacally sorted by artists in folders.
Does it pick up like that, or do you have to move all your music elsewhere ? into one of thoere programs ??

I'm fairly sure it would run off ID tags although i didnt really look at the Linux box (just the browser/control app). Sorry, not sure :)
