Hey all, i'm thinking about either setting up my own HTPC or purchasing a prebuilt one but I was curious if a Wireless N signal is strong enough to carry an uncompressed bluray stream at all? and if it is, what is it's typical max range before the signal drops off too much for it to be able to do this? or if there are any other suggestions then i'm more than happy to hear those too, thank you :)

Thats fine, I can wire it up it'd just be more of a hassle, I wasnt sure if Wireless N was up to the task at all but it appears it's not unfortunately :(

There are probably calculations you could do to work it out but in practical terms it will suck.

Yeah, stick with wired if you can. Large amounts of data fast over wireless is a PITA to get right. You can probably do it but it, but it will be like trying to get channel 5 on a TV set with a portable aerial.

40GB for a 100min move = 400MB/Min = 6.6MB/Sec = 52Mb/Sec

Not a blu-ray expert but im guessing the disk will be nearly at capacity, my wireless N only gets near these speeds when you are really close, not a chance in another room though.

Even if you could sustain the speeds for long periods, Wi-Fi is messy, It's signal strength fluctuates all the time so momentary drops in speed could cause stuttering, which even for a split second now and again would ruin the experience of watching a movie.

Blu-ray is still compressed, just a high bitrate. Uncompressed HD frames would be a phenomenal size. :p Typically can range anywhere from 15-35 Mb/s (for comparison a DVD would be about 6-8 Mb/s) so you'd need to ensure the connection could maintain this throughput which unfortunately is unlikely over Wi-Fi.

Best I've had over wifi was ~12 Mb/s, same for gigabit powerlines, I quickly bit the bullet and laid down cat5e.
