Am I right in thinking that all the pre-N hardware is built on proprietary standards so all the stuff I buy needs to be made by the same manufacturer until the 802.11n is standardised?

Hi

You need to check but most of it will be based on draft N standards. This means that you should be able to connect say a Dlink draft N router to your ADSL connection and have a draft N Netgear wireless adapter on the machine and get draft N speeds.

most of the makers are using stuff based on Draf N 1.1 and you should be seeing firmware updates coming soon that takes kit to draft 2.0 which got signed off on a few weeks ago.

I am awaiting confirmation from Netgear that there hardware will be firmware upgradeable to the final N standards as D-Link announced a week or so ago that all there draft N stuff will be.

If I get a chance I may try using a netgear N usb adapter to a D-Link N modem at the weekend.

As far as I know the N standard will become official in November of this year so if you can wait....
If not, I'd certainly advise buying the same make of wireless AP and wireless NIC where possible to minimise any potential issue.
