My friend has just joined a broadband ISP who has supplied a free DG834G wireless router, however there is no wireless adapter supplied for her computer only an ethernet cable.

If she buys a USB wireless adapter can the router be set up in another room and connect without wires to the main computer, or are wireless routers only wireless to additional computers?

The main reason for going with this ISP was to get the wirless router set up as there is no telephone point in the room where she has her computer.

You can set up the router in another room and use a wireless adapator to connect the PC. You do not need to use the ethernet connection on the router.

it will work fine if the router is in the other room, but its best to connect it to the pc first to configure the wireless settings. then when you install you wireless adapter it will be ready o go.

Thanks for that.

Do I need any special adaptor or will any USB wireless adaptor be fully compatible?

Axel

just buy a usb adaptor and plug it in the usb port no special adaptor is needed.

good luck.

Thanks for the reply.

Can you recommend one and a specification that will work?

There are so many available from £5 to £50, not sure what I will need for a simple connection.

i've used the Netgear WG111 and Belkin F5D7050UK and both were easy to setup but any adaptor will do just make sure you get one with 54Mbps - 802.11g specs.
