Hi guys,

I sen up a wireless network the other day for me and my housemate. Im using a linksys wireless router (wrt54gl) and we both have pci cards, myn is linksys and im not sure what make my house mates is.

Basically last night i upgraded to a 10mb connection, to test this we seperatly logged on to our ISP's newsgroups and started to download the same thing, He went first then stoped it then i did it. My housemate had speeds of 900-1000kb/s but when i started it the most i could reach was 600kbs, this seems to be the case on speed test aswell even though my housemate isn't downloading anything at the time just idle. My signal is 99-100% and the strength is good. When my house mate turns his PC off however i can achieve full speeds. Is there any reason why my speeds are being bottlenecked even though my housemate is doing nothing on his pc? his seems to ramp up to full whack when im doing nothing on myn.

Any help appreciated!
Si.

Could be all sorts of reasons including ones not wireless related

It should do no harm to check drivers and client software, perhaps use simpler encryption (WPA can be hard on some older cards)

You could check if its related to who logs on first to the router in which case look there for your problem.

Both pc's on at the same time will add additional wireless traffic did you test with the other devices still powered up even if not downloading?

yes my housemates computer was idle at the time and i was only getting 600kbs but if i am idle and he tries it he gets 900/1000 kbs its only when he switches his pc off that i can get the full speed. It would seem im limited when his pc is on even though he is not downloading anything but the same is not true when he tries to download and my pc is idle.

I found out that his card is a zykel, no idea if this has any relation to it. The firmware on the router is up to date and my housemate says theres no updates for his card, not sure about my card however ill try that later but if theres any more suggestions they are greatly appreciated.

We are using WEP 128 encryption , not sure if that would effect it

cheers
