Hi all

I've just had virgin media installed in my house using their supplied wireless router Netgear WGR614. It seems it doesn't work with my DLink DWL-510 card. So i need a new one:rolleyes:
I was looking at the Netgear WG311T but getting some really mixed reviews, can anyone recomend this or another card for using with vista? I've only used D-Link and never really had much of a problem with them, I tried a belkin usb adapter once, never again though!
I'm actually mostly using the net for gaming, do you think i'd be better off upgrading the hole network setup to 108 or even 300mbps? Would i actually see the difference?

Sorry for such a dull thread and thanks in advance!

Yeah i'd avoid anything from Belkin or anything USB powered.

How about something from the Linksys range? They are pretty good cards. BTW, i can't seem to fault anything from the Netgear range... what did you hear was bad about them?

It's mainly off Amazon, i know i know not exactly great place to look for reviews:rolleyes:

I'll prolly go with netgear then, if i can find some available anyware......

What do you think about gaming and 54mbps wirless btw, do you think there is much difference between speeds? If there is then i might be tempted upgrading my router and get a faster wireless card too;)

You might want to look at "Smoothwall" if you have any old low spec PC laying around. Stick it between the ISP and your LAN. Gives you all sorts of useful stuff for free.

I've been using it for years and installation is a doddle even though its Linux. Just install, configure as per the simple instructions, turn on and forget.

Can't really comment on gaming over wireless i'm afraid mate as i'm not really into that. I can't see it being a huge problem though if your connection is nice and stable, otherwise you'd end up with drop outs left, right and centre during gameplay.

With the supplied router you're limited to 54mbps so there isn't much point in getting anything faster.

I've just check the OCUK website and they are out of stock on all of the netgear cards... i'm guessing thats where you checked too? lol.

Hope you get it sorted though. :)

He's wanting a wireless solution though....? Surely adding another machine plus buying another NIC for the smoothie is defeating the object? lol.

i use a cheap 54mbps usb wireless adapter on my sons pc upstairs, and it works great for online gaming.

edit :- i went from a pci wireless card which became faulty to usb and saw no difference in quality of connection ect
