Wireless network card for Desktop

So due to moving home, I now need wireless connectivity for my PC.

Just wanted to check, does this adapter fit into the smaller PCI-e slot on my motherboard?

Yes it does fit into the small slot. I put one in my sons PC.

I'd rather not have the extra cables running about to be honest. With the above network card, will I really see any noticeable drop in performance compared to a wired connection? Do homeplugs compromise a wired connection in any way?

All depends on signal quality to the room your PC will be in. How far from the router you are etc, too many variables to give you a perfect answer.
My wireless works perfect throughout the entire house, apart from the one corner of my sons bedroom that his PC is in! So I had to get a NETGEAR EX2700 and it works perfectly. You can also run an RJ45 from it too.
