Flying to Hong Kong in a couple of weeks and I'm looking for some noise cancelling headphones for the plane

As much as I would love the Sony or Bose QC35 the price is just that bit too high really. Is there anything else out there which is going to perform well for a smaller budget, I think £150 is my max on budget really

I guess right on budget would be the Sennheiser HD 4.50 BTNC. They are around £150.

If you can up your budget by £50 you could go for the Sony WH-H900n, which are supposed to be almost as good as the Sony WH-1000XM2, which would obviously be the preferred choice, and the ones I ended up going for.

Or you could save £50 and get the Sony MDR-ZX770BN, which seem to get quite good reviews on the rainforrest.

It is worth noting, I only have experience of the Sony WH-1000XM2, and haven't yet taken them on a plane, or indeed out the house. So I couldn't tell you the differences between their performances as headphones, noise cancelling or not. But just a quick look at various reviews.

Personally, I'd try and push the budget for the WH-H900n. Here is a comparison between them and the WH-1000XM2:

You could, of course, take a chance that the headphones will be cheaper in the airport. But you won't be able to fully charge them before the flight if you do pick them up there.

I've never seen tech cheaper in duty free. The prices are scandalous, usually the same as regular rainforest prices at best.

It depends, I picked up a pair if Sennheiser IE8i's for 99 quid a couple of years ago where the cheapest was 260 online, still kkick myself for not buying two pairs!!

Yeah, I passed on a pair of AIAIAI's for £110 then they were £200 everywhere. Was for kicking myself.

Sony MDR 1000X refurbished can be had for £195 on the Argos eBay outlet. I got mine from there and they are great.

However be aware that the Sony's need to be connected to a Bluetooth source or via the jack to prevent them turning off after 5 mins. You don't have to play music but they have to be connected. So if you want to turn your phone off you'll need to connect a dummy jack into them to keep them on and cancelling noise.

^^^ not the case with mine??? Mine happily stay on without switching off. Very strange.

edit - See what you're saying now, regarding NC, sorry makes sense.

The gold/cream Sony MDR 1000x are currently £179 on Amazon. I'm not a fan of the colour but they are great value.

Bose q35. I know you said to high. But I have done the same as you, and in the end (read years) I went and got them. There is nothing close for cheaper. They are so earily quiet. On a plane godsend.

Seriously every day on the tube I say these increase my life goodness by at least 100%.

Another vote for the Bose headphones

Bose QC35s are £285 at Dixon’s in the Airport at the moment. That’s what I’d buy.
