So i have been using the same cheap usb wifi dongle for year's on my desktop pc, i get a max of 50mbs on speedtest websites. i just tried the same speed test on my iphone xr using my home network and i'm getting 70mbs, I am guessing the cheap dongle iv'e been using has been bottling my connection?

Looking at other dongles online is leaving me confused, some say 150mps,300mbps etc some 150mps ones are more expensive than 300mps ones, what is the difference? My computer is only about 20 feet away from my hub. What kind of dongle do i need to maximise my connection? also anybody know if an iphone xr is bottlenecked at 70mbs or would you say that is my max speed as my phone reads that with me standing next to the hub.

No way to know without first knowing how fast the broadband connection actually is. How fast is it if you run the same speed test using a wired connection?

You're always better using a wired connection for fixed equipment if you can. Running a cable 20 feet is usually possible.

If you must use wireless you need to know the capabilities of the router/access point you're connecting to before deciding on what to buy.

What is the connection type/speed and router model? Default answer is run a cable for maximum speed, but depending on your connection, if your usage is mainly WAN limited then something with an external antennae that supports 2.4Ghz and 5Ghz (assuming you’re router has 5Ghz) should give you a good chance of achieving maximum throughput. As to the XR question, we can’t say without knowing the answer to the connection speed question, but being right next to the router can also cause performance issues.
