hi all,
we're moving in just over a weeks time to a large house which already has a network setup. Currently there is a wireless bt router at the front of the house. The signal from this does not extend very and so a wireless access point was installed on the other side of the house which is connected via 25m of rj45.
Now the access point is about 100 years old, and only support 11mbits.
The problem I have is that my new office (wooden cabin) is about 50 feet from the access point and I am planning on running 2 / 3 pc's (1 workstation, 2 servers) plus a couple of laptops. Obviously 11mbits isn't going to get me very far.
So I have two options...
1) extend the rj45 from the front of the house and run it into the office. This is about 75 meters in total then add a 100mbit switch to network the kit together. This will leave the access point in place and allow laptops etc to be used out by the swimming pool and top section of the garden.
2) replace the bt wireless router with a new wireless-n router which may or may not provide the range (it's a 138 year old brick house) and bandwidth to allow the kit in the office to work at a reasonable rate.
Option 1 will set me back the price of a piece of rj45 and the cost of a decent switch. Option 2 will cost me the price of the wireless-n router plus various wiress cards for the workstation, servers, and laptops.
Personally I think option 1 would be the best bet, but does anyone else have an thoughts?
