Morning guys.

Im looking for some advice on what people use for wireless controllers on PC please.

We have new arrivals in the house twins to be exact so having some downtime/alone time in my PC area aint gonna be happening often.

Im looking at going wireless i do have an old xbox controller i use occasionally via a usb extension but would like a wireless controller/experience.

I plan to get a PS5 in the near future so was considering getting a PS5 controller so it would be multipurpose in the future.

I do like the xbox wired controller also so wireless version would be nice.

Does anybody use the PS4 controller, i had to buy a brand new one last year just to play last of us2 on PS4 and never used it since this would suit me best but not sure how compatbile it is and user friendly while PC gaming? This would be ideal as it would cost me nothing.

Main game of choice is Rocket league , RDR2 and GTA5 everything else i'd used mouse/keyboard.

TY

Any of the more recent Xbox and Playstation controllers will work great with games that are designed with game controller input in mind. You can still use a controller with other games that arent really intended for controller use, but they likely won't be optimised as well. I have a PS4 controller which I use with mainly Steam games as well as GTAV, but I've been using that via USB. Steam has profiles for PS and Xbox controllers. I assume other clients will too, but that's something I've no experience of, Rockstar launcher aside.

Rockstar launcher and GTAV is less intuitive, shall we say. With a Steam game, I can plug in PS4 controller while game is running and it will detect and work. GTAV doesn't. Have to close the game first.

Although I have been using USB connection, I've decided to get a Bluetooth dongle and give Windows 10 a chance with Bluetooth. My previous experience setting up Bluetooth devices was wth Windows 7, which was a pain in the rear end. Wasn't just as simple as plug in and go, mainly due to having to configure the correct driver. Hoping it's less of a pain in the butt with Windows 10, but this is Microsoft we are talking about, so..... :p

Decided to go with the TP-Link one linked below. Will update when I get it, as to whether it plugs in and works, or whether I have to end up having to mess around. :p

Thanks so much im gonna give it a try for sure, sadly dont have bluetooth on my setup so i'll order a bluetooth dongle and try the PS4 controller out for sure.

Steam is my main platform hopefully Rockstar will be fine too.

This Bluetooth dongle finally arrived. Setting it up was a lot less hassle than setting up a Bluetooth dongle in Windows 7. Plugged it in, went to settings, turned on PS4 controller to pair mode, went to add Bluetooth device, controller popped up and all was done. Loaded Steam and sure enough the controller was detected. Loaded No Man's Sky, messed around for a few mins and it worked great. Also tried Conan Exiles, which again worked great.

GTAV though, wouldn't detect the controller. Works perfectly fine if I use USB. Not sure if Steam is the difference as that works as an intermediary, if that is such a way to put it. Set the controller up in Steam and it works with the game. I didn't get GTAV through Steam, but seeing as the Rockstar launcher is used anyway and is just launched by Steam, I wondered if adding GTAV as a non Steam game would work. Tried adding the Rockstar launcher, which launched that from Steam, but still the controller didn't work with GTA. Then I tried adding the PlayGTAV.exe to Steam and hey presto! Bluetooth controller works with the game.
