Wireless PCI card in Windows, service help

Hello good people of overclockers.

I have a generic (can't remember which) wireless PCI card. Whilst acquiring the network, it disables and enables the network a few times, each time freezing the computer for a second or so. This isn't really the problem, the problem is when the network connection becomes constantly disabled, and always says "connection failed" and goes back to a disabled state when enabled. Sometimes the wireless applet can be restarted and it will work, and at other times the network completely stops working, and can only work after a restart.

On further investigation, when this happens, the "TI Wlan service" (Wireless LAN Utility\tiwlnsvc.exe) cannot be restarted, or shut down. It simply times out when trying to do anything with it.

From this I have deduced that this is the root of the problem, and that maybe some new software to handle the card could do better. However, I have no idea what the card is, device manager just lists it as "802.11g Wireless PCI Card".

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks for reading.

what os are you using? and which service pack?

could use everest -google it to find out exactly what make it is, it scans your hardware id's and tells you exactly what you have

xp is better suited for wireless, but you should be able to get it to work, have a look for drivers that everest suggest

Thanks.

Okay, everest reports it as an OvisLink WL-8000PCI. Having a look around for drivers now, although I think the only driver I've found for it so far is the same version as the one I'd be replacing....

(haven't actually done it yet due to some "access denied" error...

OK... so I've got a more specific driver for it... Although I keep on getting "Access Denied" whenever I try to install the new driver. It must be because it's open already somehow, but I've tried disabling it in the device manager, restarting and trying again, but to no avail.

I've tried everything I can think of (admittedly not much), can somebody suggest a solution?

Thanks for your ongoing support.

how are you trying to update it, have you extracted it with winzip or winrar and then updated it in device manager..

Yeah, extracted them, found the device in device manager, update drivers, specify folder... It says its found one in the windows directory, the current one, upon hitting the "more drivers button" or whatever it's called, I select the OvisLink WL-8000PCI and hit update. Then I get a message like "Cannot perform operation, access is denied".

Since I've never had a problem with permissions before, I'm led to assume that it's because it's locked or something.

Thanks.

Get rid of the PCI card if it's troublesome . I now use those USB adapters , no problems and get a good signal , there not at the bck of the Pc getting interferance from the power supply etc , plus there quite cheap now.
