My mother has just moved into a new house, and the phone point is downstairs. Now she doesn't use the internet much so uses a modem. Without a phone socket up stairs this is obviously now rather hard.

I'm wondering if one of these wireless phone extension units will solve her problem?

Anyone had any experience of running a modem over one of them?

Just use a wireless router and stick a pci/usb card in here PC, easier than a wireless phone extn (they probably filter out the adsl signal)

"Now she doesn't use the internet much so uses a modem." :) (remember those!)

Yeah I understand, but if you're going wireless with the extender anyway then the router might be the way to go unless the extender does definitely transmit the ADSL signal as well you're going to have to do the wireless router option

lol your missing the point.

When he says modem, i think he is meaning the good ol' 56k dial up connection ;)

In which case no adsl :D lol

The DECT phone extender I've got claims it can be used with a Dial-up modem, I use it as a fax line extender

Given the price of dial up, it might be worth seriously considering ADSL...

So if she uses it for say an hour a month (60p), you'd still recommend ADSL  :)

I've been through this with her... She's literally online for a few hours a month... So it doesn't make sense for her to go ADSL TBH - Unless you're aware of ADSL which is well well cheaper than £10 a month...

What about PAYG broadband - from say 3? you pay for the dongle but then you only pay fo what you use and you'll get reasonable speeds

Not being a mind reader, I didn't know she used it that little  :)

I didn't recommend it either - I said it might be worth considering. Neglecting the fact it's a lot faster and doesn't leave the phone engaged (unless you're paying for a second line), you don't have to pay local rate phone calls too long (>16 hours off peak or <4 hours at peak time per month) before ADSL pays for itself...

Newnet Home Lite 12 ND, 1GB limit, up to 24Mbps, £8.95. Home Lite 12, 1GB limit, up to 8Mbps, £9.95.
The former requires having access to their LLU network, the latter doesn't.

I actually signed a friends parents upto Newnet, and TBH they've been VERY good! £9 a month isn't bad, but there is of course the setup fee and adsl router, and wireless card to buy... I'l have another chat with her :)

If it's got to be low cost, use a cable?
DG834 for ~£40, £50 activation fee, £10 a month for a year = £210 in the first year.

You only have to use dialup for 6 hours a month at peak time, or 30 hours a month off peak, and it's cost neutral in the first year. From there on in, you're making a profit.

I suspect she's online for less than 3-5 hours a month... Mainly off peak, which means just a couple of quid...

I belive most DECT units claim to work with modems, only thing I might query is how fast they might go and how reliable would be the connection.

56k modems that used proprietory extenins to get the 56k speed might revert to standard 33.6 or 28.8 k operation which is doable but a bit less speedy.
