Hey guys just trying to diagnose a problem with my girlfriends laptop, before I knew her, wifi randomly stopped working, as I have see. On many laptops, have tried basic diagnostics, ie uninstalling and reinstalling drivers, reboots, even reset home network to default settings, I also just checked under the bottom cover and noticed that the wifi card appears to have a black wire missing, or am I just going crazy? It detects networks but has 'no signal' all the time and will only successfully connect through and LAN cable, any ideas? Cheers guys

What's the laptop model?

What's the wireless card in it?

Have you checked for any know configuration issues with the wireless card?

Have you tried getting some wireless diagnosis software onto the laptop? There is specialist software available.

Any interference on a given channel? Have you tried different channels?

Amilo la1703, I think it's a generic Fujitsu wireless card, and strangely the laptop can connect to the portable hotspot on this iPhone but not the network even after I have reset it to factory defaults

If the laptop can connect to some hotspots but not others, it would suggest a wireless compatibility issue with this one particular hotspot. Such a problem won't be easy to overcome, but you could try experimenting with software configuration settings on the laptop wireless card to see if you can find the issue.
