Wireless radio channels from router and access point

I have an Ubiquiti Access point (lite) attached to my home network via network cable to cover some dead spot in the house. My question is, should my radio on both my router and AP be the same? Would devices be smart enough to jump from one signal to another or will it hold on to it for as long as it can and have reduced bandwidth?

Or if someone can suggest a better setup how my wireless radio waves will overlap?

Thanks

If they're far enough apart distance wise they can be on the same channel but I'd suggest two different ones. Or set the router to one channel and the UAP to auto and it'll find the most appropriate. That's a bit simplistic if you're in a congested area though, in which case a channel scan to find the clearest channel for the router would be advised. UAP should sort itself out on auto and clients won't mind what they're set to. I don't think (but am prepared to be very wrong on this) that the channel affects how long a client will hold on to one AP over another as it roams.

The issue with Unifi auto is it constantly put the 5GHz channels up into the DFS channels and there is lots of radar about so your WiFi shuts down. Not ideal.
