Wireless Ralink 2500 in Ubuntu

I have just installed Ubuntu 6.06 on my laptop and although I am almost completely lost as this is my first install of Linux I am getting on ok.

One problem though, when I go to the preferences for my wireless card it completely locks up and I have to turn the laptop off by the on switch. Does anyone know why this is?? Should I install something first before? If so how??

Can anyone help me out?? I really want wireless on my laptop. I have never been able to connect to my wireless network even when I had windows even though my Nintendo DS and girlfriends iBook worked perfectly. It just keep crashing, I downloaded a driver from the Ralink website but no idea what to do with the files???

Any help would be great!

Probably not the most useful but there does appear to be a bug report filed at
https://launchpad.net/distros/ubuntu/+source/linux-source-2.6.15/+bug/34902

The general consensus is to either use the latest drivers from CVS or wait for the fixed driver to be shipped (this should only take a few days as its already marked as fixed commited as of yesterday).

Thanks for the reply, I read through the link you sent, yeah seems like a well known problem which is annoying. To be honest I have no idea what CVS is (did a quick google but not sure quite what it is still and how to install it), any idea how Ican get he drivers from there? Sorry if I am being an annoying noob!

The CVS drivers are manually bundled up and are available at:

Alternatively, if you want to do it "by hand", follow the instructions at
http://sourceforge.net/cvs/?group_id=107832 (Ill admit that I wouldnt recommend this route unless you want frequent snapshots of the updated source as it is altered).
