Hi,

My brother has bought an xbox 360 and wants to connect it to the internet. His mate has sold him a BT wireless and wired router. My question is if we connect my PC and his Xbox up to the router with wires will the router still transmit wireless broadband so that people can use my connection. I don't have a clue about routers and there are no instructions in the box, i just don't want anyone on my street getting free broadband. Also there isnt a cd or anything in the box, does it not need a driver or anything?.

Thanks in advance

Mark

I cant even get it to work anyway, i might just buy a wired router. The internet on my pc is working but the console is failing the DNS test whatever that means.

Unless you disable it, the wireless bits will be still on...

Nope.

More detail about how exactly it's failing (like the output of what IPs the router's dishing out for starters) would be useful. Replacing it for a wired router is pointless.

The thing is i havn't got any instructions here so i havn't got a clue what to do. How do i find out what ip its dishing out?. All ive done is plugged my settop box into the router in socket 1 then pluged my pc into socket 2 and xbox into socket 3. The pc internet was working the xbox couldnt connect to xbox live.

How would i turn the wireless function off?, there are no buttons on the router apart from the on off switch.

I then did a connection test on the Xbox the IP test passed but it failed on DNS test.

Assuming it's running Windows XP, start, run, ipconfig /all on the PC.

Now this bit sounds odd.
The internet connection should be going into a separate port, not just another switch port.

In the router's web interface. You should be able to get the manual from BT's site, or it should be the default gateway in the output from ipconfig.

It sounds like you're trying to connect an ADSL router to a cable modem, which is never going to work...

Im on NTL 4mb broadband through a set top box. The router is a BT wireless Broadband ADSL Router, BT VOYAGER 2110.

Great mate, selling you a router that won't work.

You need to get rid of that router, and replace it with a "cable/DSL" router, that doesn't have a modem, and will have a WAN port to connect the STB to, as well as instructions for you to read.

:o i think this could be my problem then, i told you i didnt have a clue about routers. There is a seperate socket and my ethernet cable wouldnt fit, im assuming this is for ADSL then?.

In that case what wired router would you reccomend for around £30 or maybe more.

cheers

Linksys BEFSR41, or a WRT54G (lobotomised)/GL (not lobotomised) with the wireless switched off.

It wasn't my mate it was my brothers mate

Same story. He was trying to use it on a cable modem too?

What's the point in paying for a wireless router if you're not going to use it? ;)

Been through this before, third party firmware, yadda yadda yadda...

The difference is an entire £15 either way.

Cheers ill google the routers you suggested now. Yep he also has NTL broadband, i dont think my brother knows what broadband we have so he could have thought we had ADSL.

Thanks for the help im going to order a Linksys BEFSR41 EtherFast Cable/DSL Router with 4-Port Switch (NW-028-LS) for £31.
