Help please

This is driving me insane

I just bought a new router and USB wireless adapter, they are Linksys Wireless G with Speedbooster whatever the hell that is.

Now I've installed everything and it works...... sort of.

The connection speed is up and down like a yoyo in the wireless network status panel, the quality of the link and signal are good but it fluctuates between 1mb and 54mb throughput.

Whats really really freaking me out is when I do a site survey the software can seen two routers, one called 'linksys' and one called 'linisys' with MAC address with just one digit different. What the heck is going on? I can't get a stable connection to save my life and the connection seems to be bobbling back and forth between linksys and linisys randomly, please help

If you can see 2 routers with differing MAC addresses then your probably picking up a nearby network. Are you running encryption?
might want to try changing from channel 11 (default) to somthing else.

My thoughts too, however the two MACs are only 1 digit apart and when I change the router name the server names both change.

I tried pushing the magic autosetup button last night and it seems to have helped and things are more stable but the connection will still drop a lot of speed every now and again. Will see how things pan out.

i'd not wait too long, if the config changes both routers then either something really weird has happened and your reconfiguring 2 routers who happen to be one digit appart in MAC and are both unsecured and set to default settings. This is unlikely, what's more likely is the local interface has a defect and for some reason has developed 2 mac addresses.

Here a cross post with linksysinfo

Hi guys I'm really hoping you can help me

I just bought a Linksys WRT54GS and a WUSB54GS as a bundle

I installed them and they worked without any encryption although I did notice something odd (more about this later), however I then decided to install the latest drivers for the WUSB54GS and use the Singlebuttonsetup and I can't get it to work. The adaptor can see the router but can't obtain an IP and I can't get into setup without the IP.

So I am back on an unsecured network trying to sort this out.

Whist looking at the wireless network monitor I notice something odd, there seem to be two routers found, both linksys, one called linksys and one called linisys. So I thought ahhhh I've stumbled over someone elses network, but it would appear not. There is only one digit between the two MAC addresses. To check I changed the SSID of the router and low and behold I still have two routers with slightly different names, one with WEP and one with PSK Surprised, here are the screen shots I took.

The monitor switches randomly between the two even when I can get a connection it still flutuates between the two in the link information screen.

To cap this I seem to be getting random drops in throughput droping as low as 1Mb whilst the monitor still reports a good link and signal. I'm tearing my hair out.

I'm going to add a WEP key just to try to give me some security but I'd like it all to work as it should. Can anyone help me?

You see two networks because speedbooster works by the AP physically having two radios (with one MAC address per wireless interface). Quite why you're actually having these problems though, sorry, no idea.

Tried a firmware update?

Ahhhhhh this is what I suspected, but no one was willing to tell me this was the case. The bloke at Linksys never mentioned it at all when I said I was supprised to see two MACs. I've got it set up with WEP 64 now so I have some security and a hacked firmware has allowed me to increase the transmission rate to 100% which gives 54Mb most of the time with no drop outs but still random drops in network speed for no apparent reason.

Oh well :/

Not on my WRT54GS you dont......you only see 1 SSID and one router and i still get my 125Mbit.

Are you using a speedbooster Card? non speedbooster card might get confused if the router is running speed booster tho. Try setting it back to 54Mbit on the router.

If everything were working properly, then yes, you'd only see a single SSID. In MB's case though something has gone **** up, hence seeing an SSID from each radio.

Open up netstumber. If both Linksys have the same SNR and attenuation etc, its probably the speedbooster channel (I think) If it has different stats, its a neighbouring network.

No, you will see two channels if you open up something like NS.
It could be that the wics set to B/G mode.

I'll have a nose at netstumbler later, there some really freaky stuff going on, wish I could film it and show you.
