Wireless router is 3 storeys down...

The 3 storey building I'm moving in to only has one wireless router which is on the ground floor. The signal is actually better than I'd expected, but ideally I'd prefer a cabled connection to the router.

There'll be 2 PCs in the flat, both of which need to be connected to the router via network cable.

Here's a diagram that explains the situation:

As you can see from the diagram, there's a problem.

Question: Is there such a thing as a splitter of some sort for cabled network connections? A way of connecting the 7m network cable to the end of the 30m one? A bit like if you have 2 electrical devices plugged into one power socket through a splitter.

The router cannot be moved by the way.

Thanks :)

Yes, but only for 100mb Ethernet or below.

The splitter will use 1 2 3 6 for one connection and 4 5 7 8 for the other. There will be one at each end to split the cable in this fashion.

Or, stick a switch at the end of the 7m cable and connect the other cable in to it.

A cheap switch would be the best solution. So now you'd have a 23M cable to the switch and then 2x 7M to the PCs, or whatever combination of lengths is best. You'd have 1 Gbit shared between the two PCs.

Ok, just googled "network switch" and I see what you mean. Seems like the best solution :)

Would there be a speed decrease?

Get a gigabit switch and it'll be more future proof. Older 100Mbit switches will be limited to 10Megabytes per second.

Or you can get another wireless router, connect it to the other end of the 30m cable, and connect the 7m cable to that as well as another wireless access point so it also covers the top floor.

Sounds like getting a gigabit switch would be the more cost effective solution but cheers for the suggestion. Will probably go for the option bledd linked :)
