Ok,so I installed a DLink DIR 655 router today for a friend.Eventually got the desktop pc connected and could access the router config page and get on the internet via ethernet cable.

Problem occured when trying to wirelessly connect the laptop. When trying without any type of security, connected fine. With WPA enabled, the laptop kept saying 'Windows was unable to find a certificate to log you on' when trying to connect.Googled and none of the solutions worked for me.Authentication page is greyed out when using WPA.Using WEP the laptop says 'Verifying Identity' or something similar.

I've been pulling my hair out for hours and have had to leave it for today but will be going back to try to rectify the solution on Weds.

Please, please, please could someone post an idiots guide to setting it up and getting it working 100%?

If it's saying anything about certificates, it sounds like you've set the machine to use WPA with RADIUS. What you want to use is WPA2-PSK.

When setting up encryption I always start at the Client PCs and check what security types they support first, then set the router to use the strongest one they all support. This avoids problems like this where you set up encryption only to find clients don't support it.

Are you talking about your router homepage here? Cos a default setting on many routers is than WAN connections cannot access the router homepage. I assume you've tried connecting to other websites using wpa?
And with wep, it usually creates about 4 hexidecimal passkeys. Again, i assume you're using the correct one to authenticate your laptop on the WAN?

Just some thoughts out loud really, not sure how much it will help, you may have already checked all this.

Thanks for the replies :D ..gives me some things to try out.

Would it be an idea to connect the laptop (client) up to the router via the cable and run the disc setup wizard on it then re-connect the router to the main desktop and try again with identical security protocols? This is the first time for me setting up wireless so sorry if it's a silly question :)
