I am currently using a D Link DI 524 but it randomly disconnects the wifi at least once a week which is a problem as I rent out my basement and the tenants dont get any internet when it drops and I dont know as I dont use wifi. I just want a reliable wireless router. I have 3 pc's, PS3 and 360 connected to the device.

The WRT54GL retails for ~$60, and would be just as good unless all the devices you'd connect will do 802.11n.

Thanks for the suggestion on the Linksys model, I can see its a very popular choice so I will try and find one here.

I cannot find the WRT54GL only the newer version the WRT54G2, is this new router as good as the old one?

I have found and ordered a WRT54GL, as soon as it arrives I will put Tomato on it and set it up, any help would be appreciated from anybody else with this setup at that point.

Installing Tomato should be the same as installing any other firmware, and you'll get a similar web interface to the original once it's installed.

No.

is there much benefit in having a WRT54GL and AM200 combo over my netgear DG834GT ?

would it stop my PS3 from dropping connection after about 30-60 of use.

For starters, what "drops connection"? The wireless connection between the PS3 and router, or the internet connection?
If it's the former, do any other wireless devices get disconnected? Is it the same if you use a cable to connect the PS3?

What bledd said - a WRT54GS would be a really bad idea, unless you're buying an old one.

What wrong with the gs and when you say old one what version?

Just curious is all I have seen the GL recommended a few times but all I want to do is make the GS a wifi receiver for the XBOX 360 using dd wrt firmware.

Less RAM, less flash, slower CPU. Won't run most of the third party firmware.
There's no difference in price, so there's no good reason to buy a G or GS over a GL.
The GSv4.0 and above are cut down.

Oh ok, GL it is then, thanks for the info :)

first thing to do after putting tomato on it

Administration->Configuration->Restore Default Configuration->Erase all data in NVRAM memory(thorough)->OK

(clears out any crap that could be in the ram)
default password is 'admin' (no username) -I think
