Hi guys,

What's the easiest way, with apps or otherwise of otuputting from laptop to TV? My Dad wants to use his laptop but sometimes use his 49" 4k Sony TV as the screen output - but no wires :) Easy enough with a HDMI cable but without?

There are probably native Windows 10 options I'm guessing?

Thanks.

Which Sony TV model is it? And what does he want to cast/mirror to the TV?

Depending on the laptop, in the notification centre quick action tiles there should be a "Project" option. If the TV supports Miracast, then the laptop will be able to cast directly to it.

If the Sony TV however is an Android TV and only supports Google Cast, then you can use Chrome to mirror the laptop, or straight out cast media directly to it. VLC can also cast to Google Cast compatible devices.

If the TV doesn't support any form of casting then you can pick up a Miracast receiver (if the laptop supports it) or a Chromecast which will plug right into a HDMI port. Miracast will be the best option as it's a direct connection from the laptop to the TV, while Chromecast requires a router to be the middle man and also adds a fair bit of latency when mirroring.

Nice! I thought it might be quite straight forward... the TV is an all singing, all dancing Smart/Android TV. He only got in March so I imagine it'll be fairly feature-heavy ;)

The laptop's arriving tomorrow so I should soon find out for him. Thanks for your suggestions!

Right click the desktop and click Display settings. Near the bottom, under the Multiple displays section there should be a Detect button. Click this to start scanning for the TV then try connecting to it.

I've seen this stop working in Windows 1903 and I'm not sure why, even after completely formatting the laptop and performing factory restore on the TV. As soon as 1809 is installed on the laptop it works like a charm again - which is a shame as 1909 will soon be forced onto it.
