Hi all,

Have just set up a wireless router, Asus WL-500g.

I am under the impression WPA is the preffered choice, but am a little unsure of setting it up.

Are the settings automatic? Wep 128bit gives you codes which are required when setting up a connection, but I see no such 10-24 hex key digit figures when trying to set up WPA?

Does the security setting chosen affect your internet speed? I have had it set up with the default settings and all was well, but since setting up WPA I have found it to go a a snails pace, so much that I just stuck a cable between the pc and router.

Sometimes, the easiest solution is the most secure and the best performing :)

In answer to your original question, WPA2 can add up to a 5% loss of network bandwidth on a wireless network. Worth it im humble opinion, but if you can stick a network cable in place then go for that instead.

I require this computer upstairs, so linked by a cable is not suitable.

I have lowered security settings and it seems to be working a bit better. Will try higher security settings again later.
