As has already been suggested, use WPA2 & MAC filtering and disable broadcasting of your SSID.

All may possibly be easily cracked by some nefarious geek who knows what they are doing but that is no reason to make life any easier for them - let them go after someone else!

As to speed issues - don't ever use WiFi to test WAN speeds, always connect directly to the ADSL Modem/Router using a Cat5 cable.
