Hi all,

I'm going to be moving house shortly to a place with no upstairs phone sockets, and although I could get a new one installed, I'd much rather set-up a wireless network.

A couple of questions (bear with me, I'm a bit of a newbie):

a ) does the router need to be near the PC, or can I set it up downstairs to connect to my PC which I'd like to be upstairs?

b ) What hardware would you recommend for this?

Cheers!

Hey there

A) Nope the wireless router can be anywhere you wish, just plug it in the BT Socket through a microfilter, thats it. The PC can be upstairs, that's fine! :)

B) This is recommended quite often:

NETGEAR DG834G (54G MODEM/ROUTER/SWITCH/FIREWALL) - £55

NETGEAR WG311G (54G PCI WIFI CARD) - £30 (This is to receive the signals from the router)

What router would be suitable depends what your internet connection is - cable or ADSL?
The DG834G is an ADSL router, and would be useless on cable.

Thanks for the replies - it's an ADSL connection so the recommended hardware is fine; any recommendations on where to get it from?
