Wireless Signal Problems

Hi,

I'm having a few problems with the signal range from my wireless and am after some advice as to what the best option is for me. I've done a little diagram to better illustrate my point.

I've currently got Virgin 10MB broadband, the modem is in room 3 (red dot) and cannot easily be moved as the wire is threaded through the wall. Up until recently, we had the router in the hallway where the red dot is, but this obviously meant running a cable down the hallway. Even from the hallway, my PC which was previously in the lounge got little or no signal, maybe 1 or 2 bars and internet speed was horrendous.

I've now moved my PC into room 2 which is our spare room. Ideally I want to have our router in the spare room also as it's out of the way and isn't too far from the modem to which it's hardwired. This now means that we get no signal whatsoever in the lounge.

I currently have my xbox 360 setup in my lounge which I want to use to stream films from the PC in the spare room. This was previously just connected via a cat 5 cable from the back of my PC. Initially, I wanted to run a cable under the carpet down the hallway from room 2 to the lounge and into the back of my 360 but having tried this last night, I'm doing more harm to the carpet by trying to pull it up than it's worth. Also, we need wireless in the lounge as it's inconvenient to have to walk to another part of the flat just to look on the internet on my iphone etc.

My current router is a linksys wrt54g running the latest Tomato firmware. I'm wondering if there is a problem with the router or interference as even when I place the router in room 3 where the red dot is, I get a very poor signal from my PC in room 2 which is no more than 5 metres away. This dramatically improves if I move the router to the doorway though. Also, my wireless is incredibly prone to hanging and I have to reboot the router fairly often, at least 3 times a week, I only upgraded to the latest firmware yesterday though so this may have fixed it…? My flat isn't huge, the length of the hallway is probably around 10 metres, I'm not sure how thick the walls are but is it unreasonable to expect good signal from everywhere in the flat?

What are my options? I have current only thought of buying a wireless repeater or extender but am not sure how well it would work or whether it needs to be hard wired to the router. Also, I guess it would need to be placed in the hallway which would defeat the object of moving the router in the first place.

I want to avoid running cables if possible. Have quickly read about home plugs but again, I have no idea how they work and whether it would be suitable for what I need.

Any other advice or recommendations would be greatly appreciated :)

Homeplugs are what you want if you want consisten reliable streaming, not saying wireless can't do it before everyone jumps in but homeplugs just simply work(Provided your wiring is ok)

Am I right in thinking that homeplugs don't extend your wireless and simply offer a socket to which you plug a cat5 cable into? Or can you get homeplugs with wireless transmitters?

Also, is it worth considering replacing the antennas on the router?

You can get either type :) . I have wired ones and they work great.
