Wireless signal

My flatmate got himself a PC with wireless adaptor, but he cannot connect in his room to our wifi from Virgin Media. The router is in the lounge, about 3m away from his PC, but obviously walls weaken the signal and there is a water tank in the way from router to his PC (so it might the cause). So he had to put his PC on a night stand and rotate it in a certain way and only then he got himself 2 bars out of 5.

I was wondering if it is because of weak signal from VM Super Hub router or because of interference? And how would you recommend me to fix the problem (apart from obviously using a cable)? I was thinking of either buying new, more powerful router (but I don't know how good or bad is VM Super Hub) and if that will help just get rid of VM router. Or otherwise connect VM router to new router and put it in my room. Or otherwise use something like signal repeater or booster (but I do not know how good they actually are).

I have no idea if it is SH1 or not, I don't know how to check, cannot see where it is written.

So it must be VM Router then? And what did you mean by using it in modem mode?

and MissChief, that is a good idea, I haven't thought about changing position of the adaptor, will have to consider that.

does it look like this

you can have your own router - but that is when you have to put SH in modem mode.

SH1 is a joke as a router. I do own one.

you might try to change the channel, or get a pair of homeplugs. but good wireless router usually solves all the problems that SH1 is known for.

So how to change router? Use SH1 router to get a signal from the cable and then connect a decent router via Ethernet cable and use it as a main source of wifi signal? Or otherwise is there a way to get SH2 from VM and how much would it cost?

they quoted me £20 to get SH1 replaced for SH2. I refused, as I use my own router anyway, just wanted to try it more-less, as new customers get it for free.

it's easy, you log in to SH administration, click on Enable modem mode, plug the cable into first LAN port on SH, which will then connect to WAN on router and that's it.

Will make them to send me SH2, since I am with them for about 2,5 years...

Otherwise will pay £20 since new router will be more expensive, and it is more convenient to have 1 decent router rather than 2. Anyhow will try to play with channel numbers before that. Thanks a lot for your help fellas.

I'm with them for about 7 years, last 4 on highest BB package they do, tried 3 different people and still no luck, I doubt they'll give you SH2 for £20 :)

they also said it's basically SH2 for free, the £20 is to cover shipping, to which I was like £20 to ship a router within UK? what a joke.

I have read that SH2 isn't really a great improvement. Who knows a decent router that will go with my SH1 for around £30?

if you only have £30 budget, you might as well stick to SH or get those homeplugs.

decent ones like RT-N56U start at around £70.

even a budget choice like TL-WR1043ND is above £40.

Yeah, I told him that £30 is not enough, whatever. What homeplugs should I get for him? And never used them, do not have a clue how they work lol

Well yeah, but never thought that it is possible, I believe this would be the best solution.

But once again I do not undestand why there is such a massive difference in price? from £30 to £100 and both of them are theoretically for 500Mb/s. So which one to choose? There are few from £25 to £35, what would be the specs. I have to look at?
