Kind of jumping the gun a bit as we're only just about to start the journey with first gen. But perhaps some food for thought while everyone is now waiting a few more days on delivery of their headsets.

I'm already thinking ahead to when VR headsets are both wireless and much smaller form factor, (for PC, not mobile). How many generations/years away do you think it'll be before the likes of Oculus and HTC produce these? I think it'll be a massive improvement to have that freedom and not have all those wires to worry about. And to wear something much lighter and less cumbersome. I imagine that unless there's any major technical restrictions, it'll be possible to reduce headsets to the size of a pair of glasses. At that point, and no disrespect meant at the amazing technology we already have, we can look back at the first gen of VR and laugh like we do when looking back at the first brick mobile phones! :p

I'm not sure how they could do this without introducing a lot of lag in the motion. Wireless video exists today but has significant lag. A good VR experience is all about instant response and no latency.

There are a few people working on 60ghz wireless, they say they could currently handle the resolution of the current headsets but need to get the cost down, and then the next gen headsets will be higher resolution so they might end up just chasing a moving target

We are now at the stage where technology needs to catch up with VR, not the other way around like it has been up to now.

wireless transmission for 4k+ video isn't here and certainly not up to the specifications required for VR. 90+ fps etc sub 20ms latency (ideally ~10ms) and more importantly the cost computer hardware required to do that rendering isn't available yet at an affordable price. I wouldn't be shocked if gen2 vr hardware is still tethered personally.
