Wireless slow and unreliable - Plusnet Hub

So this Plusnet Hub seems a load of rubbish.

My connection is 73.8 down, 20 up.

Doing a speed test on the PC shows 68.5 down, 18.66 up. This looks perfectly acceptable to me.

Doing the test on the mobile app shows 27 down, 18.6 up.

Phone in question is connected on 5Ghz and is 3m away from the router and is in line of site.

The connection is also very unreliable and cuts out a lot, but not 100% sure if that's the wireless, or the broadband at fault.

What settings can I check before I deem this router a waste of time and buy a different one?

Might just be a problem with the hub perhaps? I have one and no issues. Works very well imo.

Have you tried refreshing the wireless channel in case interference is causing the problem?

Using Wifi Analyser on Android shows this as the only network on 5ghz, so my thinking was the channel interference/traffic shouldn't come into it.

Perhaps I'll speak to Plusnet - the router certainly seems to be worse than the Sky one

In exactly the same boat with exactly the same useless router. It's been nothing but a pain since the day I got it. My old talktalk one never had any issues. Plus net, when you eventually get through to them, like to blame things its sitting next to for interferance, shame as it's sitting exactly where the talk talk one did.

Been running the Speed Test app frequently - especially when it seems to be slow/lagging. My down speed via Ethernet is around 55mb at the moment, so quiet a drop when using wireless.
You can see from the screenshots in the spoiler that sometimes it slows down completely, and even 0 at times. The consecutive tests in the screenshot were all carried out in the same location, one after the other. Can't believe how much it can change.
Sometimes the app just reports a network error and says there's no connectivity. The wired internet still works, and my phone shows full signal.

Spoke to Plusnet at the weekend, they done a line test and found a fault. (Should be connecting at around 76mb down). I was told the slow speed was due to the line fault! :o I told them 3 times it was faster via Ethernet. They agreed to send an engineer out, and they would contact me within the next few days to arrange a date/time. Not heard anything yet....

Is it the hub one thing you have? Looks like the BT router but in white. I've been using it a few weeks and have no problems. This will be the first time I've used a ISP router since the original sky router DG834GT.

The older plusnet routers were awful.

I had an older single band router Plusnet and a basic TP-Link AC1200 dual band was a vast improvement on that ~£45.00

Might be worth checking reviews compared to the newer ones first though.

What would you suggest for £100 or less?
I got my Archer VR900 (VDSL2 modem-router) for £99 but it's typically £120-140. However, if you don't mind using two boxes you can just get a non-modem router which'd be cheaper, e.g. the Archer C9.

It does only allow 16 port forwarding rules though, if that's an issue. I'm personally using all 16 (8 in modem-router mode, 8 in router-only mode for debug).
