Hey guys,
I am having issues with streaming in my flat. Due to not being able to access the floors or ceiling cavities I cannot run cat cable, well not for a while at least as I do plan to do this when we get the builder in at some point this year as we will be ripping up all the laminate flooring.
I tried using 200mbps home plugs which managed to stream 720p mkv files ok. 1080p was a no go due to the old cabling in the flat, I was getting poor through put. So I tried my wireless router which is a D-Link DIR-615 n150 which I got with my virgin connection. I am getting according to windows good signal in the lounge but it struggles to stream even 720p mkv's without stuttering. I used my wireless meter and I'm getting -70dbm's by the TV which is pretty bad and its not very far distance wise in terms of today's routers but there are various internal walls in the way they are 100 year old internal walls so not very friendly. The wireless is fine for normal browsing or gaming just not streaming.
I think the DIR-615 is a particularly poor router on the wireless front. DD-WRT might be a way of improving it but not sure how much of a effect it would have. Could any of you guys recommend a good router for streaming 1080p over wireless n?
I did see some Buffalo Wireless-N300 Cable Router's on the tech site with buyer in the name which are 20 quid each, they may not be the best but I could get two and form a bridge with a router in the lounge to get a better throughput to the media centre as it would closer. Or am I better off forking out 100 quid or so on a dual band router?
Cheers
