is there any equipent that will do this

what it's for is to put a camera in a shed (bout 30m from house), the house has brick and stone walls and the shed is made of tin/wood, want to transmit the camera to the house

recently bought a wireless baby monitor as it claimed to transmit up to 100m, but it doesnt work in the shed so that distance is without obstructions i think

can anyone reccomend a solution for me ? Ideally I'd like to be able to view the camera using a laptop and the wireless router so it can be moved around the house

Get a wireless repeater and put it as close to the shed, but inside the house, as you can. An N one might do the trick. If that doesn't do it buy a cantenna and fix that to the repeater.

the wired IP cameras plug straight in to the router yes ?

then it would be viewable on any computer connected to the router wired or wireless ?

quite a lot of work running a cable though, there must be some wireless tech that is powerful enough?, even if it's expensive it might be less expensive than the work needed to run a cable safely

will this make the baby monitor work?.... or would i need to buy a wireless ip camera?

It won't work the the baby monitor. What I'm suggesting is that you have a wireless network camera connected wirelessly to your adsl modem / router, you then have a wireless repeater at the closest point to the shed whilst still being in your house. If this still isn't enough for you to get a wireless signal in your shed then you attach a cantenna to the repeater and you'll be sorted.

how does the wireless repeater not extend the range of the baby monitor as it works on 2.4ghz too, from what I have read

not doubting you here, just like to know these things!

another thing...the router I have just now is a linksys WAG354G, it was cheap yearsss ago, is that likely to hold things back ?

Shouldn't hold things back at all, also as above about it won't extend the baby monitors range. If anything you might find it interferes with your wifi.

Another thing to consider, for your wifi are you using WEP or WPA encryption? You should really be using WPA anyway and this is especially true if you're going to be extending your coverage.

back to the baby monitor again im afraid :d....

the camera has a small aerial attatched to it....the baby monitor system works if the camera is outside the shed, but stops working when u take it inside.

I have found wireless systems that claim to work from inside metal sheds but they use a transmitter that has to be placed outside the shed

think it would be possible to extend the antenna on the baby monitor camera so it can be placed outside ?
I take it the antenna is just a bit of metal in a plastic casing ??
would something as simple as wrapping wire round the antenna and leading outside maybe work ?

cant take the baby monitor back now as it was bought ages ago so maybe worth trying some DIY on it ? :o
