I need to connect a single PC through its RJ45 wire connection to a wireless network.

There are various 'Wireless Range Extenders' that pick up wireless signals for retransmission and have RJ45 sockets, but it is not always easy to tell from the manual whether these can be used as outputs. If they can it would solve the problem. Many seem to inlcude sockets for set up, or so that they can be used as wireless access points for existing routers ie as universal devices, not just repeaters.

The D-Link DAP 1522 appears to be able to do this but is ~£100, against £25 for others.

Anyone have experience of this type of device?

You mean a wireless bridge where the wireless device plays wireless client, connecting to something else? You don't have to spend anything like £100 - a WRT54GL will definitely do it.

You're not "using the RJ45 sockets as outputs" - any network device will have ethernet ports that'll send and receive data or it would be utterly useless. The feature you're looking for is that it should work as a bridged wireless client (as opposed to an access point, which is the normal mode).

a Belkin Wireless WIFI Network Bridge Gaming Adaptor 54G will do this and there from 25 pounds on ebay
or
Buffalo 54Mbps Wireless Repeater Bridge WLA2-G54C

What tolien said, get the WRT54GL so that if you don't need the wireless bridge in future you can use it for all manner of other things. It's hardly any more expensive than a standalone bridge (which are almost all universally terrible) and much more useful in the long term.
