Hi all,

Flat down from us got burgled the other day and a van pulled in the drive today and knocked on the door with a very unconvincing reason for being there. Does anyone know anything about wireless webcams? Which is good? etc.?

Thanks

not to sound like an american, but a gun would work far better.

also what was the unconvincing reason?

you should have a look for wireless cameras, which come with a reciever, you can plug this in with a normal video cable into a VCR/DVDRecorder/GPUcard. and configure it to record. i would get 2, one night vision, other normal, i would also get a IR emitter to brighten up that nv camera.

wireless has negatives that you would have to change the batteries every few days to a week, (depending on battery size), but its range is enough to put it within 100m in a tree or something clever. i would also recommend a monitor to display these camera feeds.

i would post some links, is it ok to post links to items OCUK is not selling? but the problem with cameras is that they wont stop anyone, it only gathers information... personally bear traps would be the best thing you should get, (if you live alone, with no small children)

One solution would be to get an Axis 207W or similar IP camera. You can set them up to send you an email of a snapshot when motion is detected. You can remotely view the camera over the internet as well as your network, so if you're not at home, you can still see what's going on. They plug into the mains, so no need for batteries.

I've looked at a few types of wireless webcam, and this one has by far the best reviews, really excellent image quality. They're over £100 though so might be a bit OTT for your needs.

i have a panasonic BL-c30 with is pretty good quality built in webserver which you can login and move the lens around.
only does wep though which is a pain.

I've just seen they've replaced the BL-C30 with the BL-C131, which has a built-in microphone, proper motion detection, MPEG-4 as well as MJPEG, WPA and WPA-2.

I didn't realise it had pan and tilt. Definately tempted with this now. It's slightly cheaper than the Axis 207W, at £160ish. The picture is not quite as good as the axis, but the controllable pan and tilt more than makes up for it. It also mentions being able to view the camera on a mobile, not sure how though.
