Wireless: What am I doing wrong

Ok, at my girlfriends house, she has internet via a cable modem. I've got an netgear wireless adsl router which I've plugged into the cable modem via ethernet, in order to be able to use the wireless in the house, but cant really seem to get it working using a dynamic (auto assigned) IP. Furthermore, once the wireless is connected (using static internal ip), I can't get net connectivity, but it works using a physical ethernet cable to the router.

Admittedly I tried this at 2am, but what am I doing wrong? :)

She has cable, I'm using a netgear router for the wireless, that just happens to have an adsl modem in it.

Edit, its not Cable Plus, its "she has a cable connection [plus] modem", sorry. Just a default ntl cable modem they gave her.

---Cable Internet Connection---> Cable Modem---Ethernet Cable--->Netgear (Router with adsl modem (not used))---Wireless--->Laptop

I tried DHCP on/off to no avail, will have a butchers at the gateway on the router, cheers. Any idea why it would work on Wired and not Wireless though?

A router does it's routing between the LAN interface(s) and the WAN interface. Your netgear router's WAN interface is hardwired to an onboard ADSL modem. You've plugged your cable modem into the LAN interface, so the router is now not doing any routing at all. This is why it doesn't work.

You need a router with an ethernet WAN port.

But it works with the wired connection?
 
Aye it is a router I've got and dont happen to use so thought Id try getting the wireless to work at the girlfriends house.
